Golf is a tough sport… and it gets even tougher as we age. If you happen to be overweight, you are killing your game. Distance, endurance, flexibility… and score are being sabotaged by the additional… and unnecessary weight (fat).
It doesn’t take an expert to tell you these things…
Let me share my embarrassing story with you…
I used to be 45 pounds overweight.
Being overweight was a reflection of what was going on inside of me. I was unhappy with my sh*tty job (working for a real life psycho), unhappy with my home life, and I let my physique go… not to mention my golf game.
I wasn’t able to play as often as I would like or even work on my game. And when I did have time, I didn’t enjoy it because I knew my life was in shambles.
The fat of the matter was I was letting myself go… I wasn’t putting up a fight to make myself happy. I had given up.
Maybe you are in a similar situation now?
The truth is… our physical health must be cherished… it must be protected… it must be #1.
Our golf game is meaningless without good health.
Sure, it’s nice to be able to drive short par 4’s and out-drive folks with my 3 wood… but being healthy is worth so much more to me. The worry alone about being overweight is devastating… the shame, the guilt, and the embarrassment.
I made the decision one day that enough was enough. I couldn’t handle another breakfast of Coca Cola and Krispy Kreme… or Chick Fil A spicy chicken biscuits. Sure, those are fine once in awhile… but this was my everyday meal plan. Once I made the decision those days were gone, I felt horrible anytime I ate those old ‘comfort’ foods.
Maybe you are in a similar boat and ready for change?
The good news is I’m going to give you everything you need to succeed. You just have to show up.

And here are 7 possibilities why you are not losing fat:
- You’re Eating Too Many Calories
- You’re Not Eating Enough Calories
- You’re Looking for a Quick Fix
- You’re Eating Too Many Nuts
- You’re Not Doing Strength Training
- You’re Doing The Wrong Cardio (or too much)
- You’re Not Sleeping Enough
.
Let’s take a deeper look at all of the above and pinpoint where we may be having some issues…
You’re Eating Too Many Calories
Well, pretty basic right? It should be, but there are a lot of ‘experts’ telling folks they can eat as many calories as they want as long as they avoid carbs.
This is just not true. Calories add up, no matter what kind they are. Some calories are better for you than others… but it’s still a numbers game. To be honest, if you are eating healthy foods it is going to be really hard NOT TO LOSE fat. Most people snack and eat way more calories than they think they do.
Eating less is a mental challenge. Most people avoid the simple truth that they are eating too many calories.
Start using a journal and track EVERYTHING. Creamer in your coffee, snacks, and all the little variables you don’t think matter… they all add up.
Consuming your target calories will require discipline. Having that rock hard body in time for your next vacation is worth it.

You’re Not Eating Enough Calories
Yes… too few calories. If you are dieting too strictly, you could be shutting down your metabolism.
The thyroid shuts down and losing fat becomes almost impossible.
An easy way to learn if your thyroid is on shutdown mode is to take your temperature every morning when you first get up. If your temperature is below normal consistently, you have a slowed metabolism.
And it may seem counter-intuitive… but the quickest way to jump start your metabolism is to boost your daily caloric intake… I’m talking through the roof, until that temperature hits 98.6 steadily. Your bathing suit will thank you for it down the road.

You’re Looking for a Quick Fix
Quick fixes DO NOT WORK. Neither do those fad pyramid scheme potions and detoxes your friend discovered and is trying to push on you (they think they are gonna get rich selling that shiz too, lol).
Let’s get real…
- how long did it take you to pack on pounds and pounds of fat?
- how many crap meals have you eaten during that time?
- how many workouts did you miss?
- how many times did you say NEXT MONDAY I’ll get back on track?
.
The reality is, this journey can take a long long time. Accept it.
There are no quick fixes, there are no shortcuts. The only thing you can do is show up and be disciplined.
The only thing that works is making a lifestyle change. Eating well has to become a ritual, a habit, and the new normal.
Balanced meals are the key. Balanced protein, carbs and fat. There is no magic food, pill or potion that will change science.

You’re Eating Too Many Nuts
Most nuts have healthy fats in them that help reduce inflammation and provide a good source of energy. However, nuts contain a lot of polyunsaturated fat. Saturated fat is better for your metabolism than unsaturated fat.
When you are dieting, nuts have to be watched closely… you are better off with green vegetables that will fill you up and not provide so many calories.
Take a look at how many you are eating… let’s limit it to ten almonds for now.
It takes a monumental amount of discipline to eat just ten almonds. Not many people can do that.
Nuts should be used like you use condiments, sparingly.

You’re Not Doing Strength Training
High reps, low weight? Bullsh*t.
The goal of any fat loss program should be to maintain your muscle mass. If you want to lose 10-20 pounds, let’s aim for making it pure fat.
Can you imagine how muscular you would look right now if we stripped 20 pounds of PURE FAT from your frame?
Personally, I’ve found that when I switch my workouts to ‘fat burning’ workouts… I get weaker and lose muscle in the process. When dieting your primary role for strength training should be to maintain your current strength levels…
For example, you are currently squatting with 225 pounds on the bar. You want to maintain that weight or get better… further, you should keep your workout style and pace the same. If our diet is on, we can maintain that muscle and burn fat too.

You’re Doing The Wrong Cardio (or too much)
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it… traditional and boring cardio just doesn’t work for burning fat.
Sure, you are doing something… you are burning calories… but you aren’t hitting your potential.
Excessive amounts of cardio can lead to an overproduction of Cortisol. Too much Cortisol leads to more abdominal fat… which lead to HUGE health problems down the road.
There are two forms of cardio I suggest that aid in fat loss:
- HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
- Walking (you could even walk while playing golf)
.
Stay off the steady state elliptical machines… they aren’t worth the time and you may end up with overuse injuries from them like Rich gets.

You’re Not Sleeping Enough
Lack of sleep is the bane of all health.
The main issue with no sleep is that your insulin sensitivity will decrease and that bastard Cortisol creeps higher. These are like a one-two punch to your metabolism and wreck your efforts of dropping fat. Sleep deprived people are more apt to gain weight than lose it.
Additionally, when you are asleep you get a nice Growth Hormone boost.
If you want to become leaner, YOU MUST GET MORE SLEEP.
