Just to recap, the four fundamentals you need to break through your next scoring barrier are:
1. Grip
2. Ball Position
3. Posture
4. Alignment
You might notice I called out Posture, and there’s a good reason for that:
Posture depends on setting the proper angles at address… and being able to maintain those angles during your golf swing.
Easy to master AND maintain…. IF…
You are physically strong enough…
Your are flexible enough…
You have good joint mobility…
Posture is dynamic. Posture is fluid. Posture requires strength, flexibility, and full range of motion.
If you sit at a desk all day, you may not have the core strength, flexibility, or range of motion to maintain posture throughout your golf swing.
Watch this video by Mark Crossfield, PGA as he gives a short instructional and a few drills to setup for good posture.
And as we age, we lose our ability to maintain proper posture through the backswing and down to impact.
Setting up in good posture is one thing…
Maintaining posture through your backswing to impact is another.
In fact, my good friend Richard (a 0 handicap) just told me his game is off and knows it is his setup and alignment causing problems..
“This is true about posture and the fundamentals. You can’t play well with the basics not working.” – Richard
Rich played competitive golf in college and his swing is a piston. Perfect timing every time. Inevitably, when he has issues, it always turns out to be one of the fundamentals changing slightly.
The elite players know that by having their basics perfected and constantly checked, it makes everything else easy. All the puzzle pieces fall in place.
Before we start working on strength, stretching, and mobility… we need to understand how to actually set up to the golf ball properly.
Tomorrow, I’ll be back with the fitness aspect of posture.
I’ll cover one exercise, one stretch, and one mobility movement that will start building the foundationof posture.
