Injuries happen from time to time. Sometimes they happen on the golf course, sometimes they happen at work, sometimes they happen playing pick-up basketball.
Whatever the activity, one thing is certain – being in the best physical condition you can be in will help prevent a lot of injuries.
An injury can absolutely devastate your golf game.
Who wants to sit around half the season and watch golf on TV?
Maybe you are experiencing an injury right now that is hampering your golf game. I hope this article can shed a little light on your problems and get you headed in a healthier direction.
After all, my goal is to help 1 million golfers improve their health so they can enjoy golf well in to their golden years.
Even though golf is a leisure sport, it ranks among sports with high rates of injuries for both pro and amateur golfers alike.
What is shocking though is the difference in injuries between pro’s and your average joe golfer. Pro’s and joe’s get injured, but injured in different parts of the body. This is in relation to mechanics and overall physical condition.
Mechanics great in pro or low handicapper, mechanics sketchy in average joe.
Conditioning great in pro (not every pro, but pretty much anyone active on PGA tour today – John Daly is still a freak of nature that I have yet to figure out), conditioning poor in average joe.
When you factor in all the different body types, swing types, physical capability of golfers, it’s no wonder there are differences between pro’s and joe’s.
So let’s take a look at the top injuries reported by golfers.. for ease of understanding, I have broken apart the professional golfer from the amateur average joe (handicap 10-20).
Injuries Among Golfers
Pro’s (Right handed golfers)
1. Low Back (overuse) Rate of incidence 25%
2. Left Wrist (most likely caused by a strong grip and/or overuse)
3. Left Shoulder (account for 8-12% of all golf injuries) (lack of flexibility and weakness of rotator cuff)
Joe’s (Right handed golfers)
1. Left Elbow (lack of mobility, strength and form). Most likely caused by fat shots.
2. Low Back (overuse and bad mechanics) Rate of incidence 50%.
3. Left Shoulder (account for 8-12% of all golf injuries) (lack of flexibility and weakness of rotator cuff).
Most injuries are due to poor mechanics coupled with muscle imbalances. The entire human body must be trained in order to reduce the chance of injury while playing golf.
To prevent or reduce injury, it is imperative that golfers employ a fitness program that strengthens weak area’s, improves flexibility, and improves stabilization muscle groups.
