Your past can define you. That is… if you let your past define you.
Guys who remember their glory years as if they were yesterday… they stay stuck in the past.
As a coach with so many students, I’ve noticed that this is the ONE THING that holds golfers back from reaching their potential. Let me explain…
If you’re over 40…
You’ve got no choice but to let get of the past. It doesn’t define you.
Forget the “good old days”.
Personally, I have no complaints about my past. I’ve had my share of screw ups and defeats… but also some victories. Those losses come with HUGE lessons. I continue to lose and learn.
The thing is though… every loss can be a victory if you decipher the lesson you were taught. Every loss should propel you further ahead.
If you’ve been holding on to something in your mind that’s holding you back… well, the best way to move ahead is to forgive and forget.
Forget what you think you “are”… let go of high school, college, your 20’s, and what you used to do.
Mediocrity lives in the past.
Stop telling yourself lies.
When we can get raw and real… that’s where the real growth happens. That’s when the score drops. That’s when the belly fat comes off.
When you stop the excuses and victimization… that’s when you grow.
I hate to tell you this, but the PAIN is where the GROWTH is. You have to dig into it and eradicate it.
It can be a dark, negative energy if you allow it to hang around.
You failed at xyz when you were in your 20’s, so that’s just how it is…
You never had time to practice like you should have…
You didn’t have this or that when you were younger…
This is just how you’ve always been…
This is how you’ve always done it…
You don’t currently have xyz…
You’re too old, it’s too late…
That’s all complete bullshit.
Change the narrative.
Tell yourself and the world a different story.
Starting today. Right now. Not Monday. Not tomorrow. Now.
I’m 47 and I’ve had my share of ups and downs.
But I can tell you this much, no matter how far I’m knocked down… I get up and fight back.
If you want that dream golf game…
And yes, eventually going sub-par, you’ve got everything RIGHT HERE you need to do it.
Right here. RIGHT NOW.
Many of my students have been where you are right now. Larry Horrie had trouble breaking 80. Now he does it on a regular basis.
Brian Terry rarely shot under par. Not only does Brian break par on a regular basis, he does it feeling better than he has in years.
Paul Roch has gone from a score so high I won’t mention it to having a respectable game… and he loves playing more often now.
You can do exactly the same.
You just need the right plan, the right coaching, and the right group of supportive friends to do it.
In fact, I challenge you to do the same. Instead of settling, push yourself even harder in your 40’s and 50’s than you did in your 20’s.
It’s far from too late or over.
